About Us

The Vision of Torrington Public Schools is to be recognized as a high achieving, future-oriented learning community dedicated to embracing all people as individuals who contribute purposefully to our diverse and dynamic society.

Our Mission is to graduate all students with the knowledge, skills, ethics, attitude and confidence to succeed in their future.

As the largest school district in Litchfield County, Torrington enrolls approximately 4,200 students in grades pre-K through 12.  Torrington High School students have been accepted at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in our nation.

Torrington teachers receive State level recognition, having been selected for awards such as State Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Teacher of the Gifted and Outstanding Middle School Art Teacher.  The District has been nationally ranked eight times as "One of the Best One Hundred Communities for Music Education" in the country.

The District provides learning centers, well equipped library media centers, exemplary Fine Arts programs, and a standards-based curriculum. The Board of Education has given significant support to the use of technology for instructional purposes, Reading and Math Intervention, a Family Resource Center and an Early Success Program at the elementary level.

The community has supported four building projects: In 1994, a new middle school was opened; in 1996, a new elementary school was occupied; in 1997, a $13.4M bond issue was approved for the renovation of Torrington High School; and, in December 1998, $12.7M was approved for the addition/renovation of the Southwest Elementary school. In April 2003, the Torringford Renovation was approved for $25,750,000.  The District is currently looking at Restructuring Opportunities to align the buildings with the current student population.

Active community involvement in the schools is evidenced by parent-teacher school groups, booster clubs and educational advisory councils.
